First and foremost, I love each and every one of you SO VERY MUCH for your San Francisco suggestions. I want to buy you all pretty, shiny things, but I can’t afford that much lip gloss. Or postage. Would you settle for a recipe for the most fabulous, decadent caramel cake IN THE WORLD? Let me know.
Thing the second: I’ve been in the market for a new hairstyle, and Whoorl has accommodated my request in spades. I’m torn between my many options, but right now, the “Hillary Clinton” is luring me in with its beautiful siren song. Thanks, Whoorl!
Thing the third: Let’s say you’re pregnant, and embarking upon a cross country flight in a few short days. Your usual go-to travel pants are a bit snug at this point. WHAT DO YOU WEAR? Do you wear yoga pants and risk looking like you’re on your way to the gym, or do you suck it up and wear a pair of your ludicrously pricey maternity jeans, which while ass-flatteringly fantastic, probably won’t be comfortable after sitting in them for SIX HOURS?
Thing the fourth: And this probably deserves more backstory than I’m giving it here, but…what’s the appropriate amount of time to wait--with nothing on, mind you, but for a thin paper sheet--until your hottie obstetrician returns to the room for your checkup? I mean, how long, really, would you give it until you hopped off the table wrapped in your paper toga, and sauntered into the hall to inquire about his whereabouts? Five minutes? Ten? I MUST KNOW WHAT YOU WOULD'VE DONE.
Thing the fifth: Speaking of my trip, I need something to read! As we all know, I don’t do so well when I’m flying, and it’s not like I can let my old friend vodka distract me this time. What’s the best book you’ve read recently? Something I can really get lost in, and forget that I’m in a large metal tube hurtling at breakneck speeds miles above the earth’s surface? On a similar note, any must-download music suggestions?

Third thing: be comfortable. You can totally rock the yoga pants.
Fourth thing: I was once left in an office for forty-five minutes. My doctor forgot about me and the office staff had started to close down for the day. But I was engrossed in Cosmo, so I don't know. Ten minutes?
Fifth thing: I'm no good on books, seeing as I seem to gravitate towards trashy romance novels lately. But songs? "Portions for Foxes" by Rilo Kiley. And if you want something depressing, "Bitter Song" by Butterfly Boucher. If you watch(ed) Grey's, you'll probably recognize them.
Hi there. I'm a new reader (I've seen your name on many blog rolls, but I think I got you from Whoorl) (and your hair is gorgeous just the way it is!).
Anyway, not sure if you're into romantic suspense (gaggy genre name) but I just finished Nora Roberts "Angels Fall" and I thought it was excellent. Or, if you want to read teeny-tiny print, you could go for Ken Follett's "Pillars of the Earth".
I think the yoga pants would work unless you feel the need to be more dressed up.
Have a fun trip!
Ooo! SF suggestions:
Taco Shop: La Taqueria. Get the Strawberry agua fresca and carnitas tacos.

Then you HAVE to go next door to Dianda's Italian Bakery. Serioulsy, it's next door. Never know what they are called, but the horn-like pastries filled with custard are my favorite.

I vote for comfy as well. Six hours while pregnant on a plane is a LONG time.
I really think you should consider the bright blue "Perez Hilton" hairdo. It would be stunning and totally bring out the color of your eyes.
I would probably still be sitting there in a stupid piece of paper shivering my ass off because I tend to lean towards being cowardly.
And? Hmmm...books, books, books. My very favorite favoritest book of ALL TIME is "A heartbreaking work of staggering genius". by Dave Eggers. It was a Pulitzer finalist and I have never laughed so hard in my life. It has a lot of sad moments but it is beyond description.
My quiet brother texted me from the airport that he was getting glared at because he was GUFFAWING. If you are in the bookstore, pick it up and turn to the front "Library of Congress Page" and read it.
If you think it is hilarious (And I bet you will) BUY IT.
I feel like I recommend the same books whenever people ask, but they are all really, really good and absorbing:
- The Secret History by Donna Tartt
- Special Topics in Calamity Physics by Marisha Pessl
- Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld
- The Great Gatsby (worth a re-read if you haven't read it in a while)
- A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving
- Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil by John Berendt (I know this came out ages ago, but if you haven't read it, it's SO freaking gripping, it'll take you right through the whole flight)
As for the gyno sitch...I always end up waiting a while in my paper-thin gown, and I never do anything about it. Maybe after 20 minutes I would get up the nerve to stick my head out in the hall?
yoga pants. definitely.
and if you haven't heard it, download "falling" by glen hansard off of the ONCE soundtrack. really loving this song right now.
you're lucky because the weather here has been beautiful lately and should hold out through your trip!
I absolutely love Sophie Kinsella's books. Very, very funny! "Can You Keep a Secret" is a must read! ~ Sheila
If you haven't already read it (which I've found many people have), "My Sister's Keeper" by Jodi Picoult is FAB. U. LOUS. You will get sucked in within seconds. I've read 7 of her books, and they are all amazing.
Also, music by the Weepies is fantastic. And not just their winter Old Navy commerical "sweetheart" song, but pretty much every song I've heard from them...it may lull you to sleep and then you can sleep away those six hours effortlessly! Or...something like that.
In any event, have a fabulous time!
I'm a delurker, but can never pass up the opportunity to recommend books...
The Girls - Lori Lansens
A Widow for a Year - John Irving
Recently I watched an amazing movie, 'Once' with a great soundtrack. I am addicted.
Oh, and wear the yoga pants!
I have not read a book in far too long.
This is based on the fact that I have three children.
Based on that experience, however, I suggest you wear YOGA PANTS.
Pregnant Mommas need to be comfortable.
xo
You just invented my new favorite phrase: ass-flatteringly fantastic.
#3: I say be comfy! Go for the yoga pants.
#4: Um. You HAVE to share the rest of that story with us! I probably would have waited 20 minutes or so before getting antsy.
do you have lululemons? those are okay to be worn outside of the gym. i ALWAYS fly in mine with a hoodie and pumas. it's my go-to travel outfit and i'm NOT pregnant.
i have tons of books and music suggestions for you...maybe i'll email them.
Agh, it's been a long time since I've been here! First... Congrats! (yes, it's been that long!)
Second, you'll soon have no time like me once the 2nd comes around. Trust me.
Third, here's the music I'm digging lately:
- LCD Soundsystem - Someone Great
- The Shins - Sea Legs
- Gram Rabbit - The Rest of Us Sleep
Have fun!
I too vote for the yoga pants. Staying comfy in an airplane is hard enough to begin with. You can change into the ass-flatteringly fantastic jeans when you land!
Here are two book recommendations - 'The Stowaway' by Robert Hough - based on a true story - it's fantastic! For a lighter read I'd really recommend 'I Don't Know How She does It', by Alison Pearson. Have fun!!!!
Delurking ONLY to suggest books and to profess my horror that NO ONE COMMENTED ABOUT THE CAKE. I say YES to the cake. That will totally make up for it.
Also? Books:
Good Omens by Neil Gaiman & Terry Prachett
Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen
Stones from the River by Ursula Hegi
I say buy some new maternity pants that are comfy and cute. Also, yes please to the cake recipe.
Yoga Pants.
I also am a huge fan of Jodi Picoult. My two all-time faves are two of her oldest. The Pact and Plain Truth.
Downloads? Since I am assuming you've already downloaded all the Aaron Neville one can handle, I am going out on a limb and suggesting Jason Mraz "I'm Yours". LOVE IT!
YOGA PANTS, my dearie. Comfort is your friend.
As for books - I am currently engrossed in YOU: On a Diet, but seeing as you are tee-tiny, I wouldn't recommend it. Therefore, I will second Lawyerish's recommendation of The Secret History (and also say I hated the book Prep). I recently read Trans-Sister Radio, by Chris Bohjalian and liked it. How Elizabeth Barrett Browning Saved My Life by Mameve Medwed is light and fun. Ooh! Never mind! Ignore all other book requests and start reading the Tales of the City series, by Armistead Maupin!! They are set in San Francisco and are ridiculously fun - so very apropos for your trip, too!
Anything by Jodi Picoult will keep you occupied for the flight. I just finished "All the Numbers" by Judy Merrill Larsen and "The Liar's Diary" by Patry Francis, and both drew me in. Keep a box of tissues by your side, too. Just a hint...
When I was prego and flying to Europe, I just wore support hose (duh!) and cozy black cotton pants. So nice!
Books? I love "Lonesone Dove" and "The Drifters". I'm thinking you might like "The Drifters". Give it a shot.
Music? Dude, anything by the Old 97's. And lately I've been digging the "Juno" soundtrack.
YIPPEE!
And I just realized that I'm late to the game and you have already one on your trip.
DUH.
So you're not gone yet.
SanFran cannot be done wrong.
It just can't be.
I may even love it more than *gasp* NYC.
Late in reading this, but I second the idea to read Water for Elephants. It was so good, I didn't even skip to the end, which is what I usually do. Also read Eat, Pray, Love which was good.
And your OB dilemma is mine as well. There were times that I was left alone for a half hour, and have stuck my head out to make sure they didn't forget about me.
